Minister: Latvian pension indexation system is fair

BC, Riga, 25.10.2017.Print version
Even though some people have criticized this year’s indexation of pensions that ensured a larger rise of relatively bigger pensions, Latvian Welfare Minister Janis Reirs (Unity) believes the system is fair, cites LETA.

The minister said in an interview with the Latvian public television today that if all pensions had been indexed equally, it would not be fair to those who had made bigger social contributions all their life. Besides, indexation referred only to pensions over EUR 350, restricting the rise of bigger pensions.

Asked whether the rise of the pensions is sufficient, Reirs said that "it is what the state can afford", besides, the rise is twice as high as in the previous year and higher than the economic growth.
