Decline in number of both newborn and deaths registered in Latvia in 9 months

Provisional demographic indicators compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that during the first nine months of 2017 15 723 babies were born in Latvia, which is 1 113 children fewer than in the corresponding period of the last year.

The number of newborn does not include children born outside Latvia to mother (usually resident of Latvia) while temporarily abroad. The data on children born abroad will be available in April 2018.

 



During the first nine months of the year, positive changes may be observed in the death number (21 363 deaths were registered) – a drop of 46 deaths, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

 

Natural increase in Latvia has been negative since 1991. Until September 2017, as the number of deaths exceeded the number of births, Latvia population declined by 5 639 persons (in the corresponding period of 2016 – by 4 572).



 

In January–September, 10 996 marriages were registered in Latvia, which is 227 marriages more than in the corresponding period of the last year.

                      

On 1 October 2016, the provisional number of Latvia inhabitants accounted for 1 million 933 thousand.
