Cloud computing used by 16.7% of enterprises in Latvia

Data of the Community Survey on ICT Usage and E-Commerce in Enterprises conducted by the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia (CSB) show that at the beginning of 2017 out of the enterprises employing 10 or more persons 98.7% used Internet, while 62.9% of the enterprises had website.

At the beginning of this year, 42.2% of the enterprise employees used computers with access to the Internet for business purposes. Compared to the beginning of 2016, the indicator has gone up by 1.5 percentage points.

 

ICT specialists[1] were employed in 13.5% of the enterprises, whereas 4.9% of the companies provided training to develop ICT-related skills of the persons employed. Significantly larger share of such enterprises was observed in information and communication sector [2] (36.3%), while the smallest share of enterprises that provided employees with such training was registered in accommodation and food service activities (2.7%) and construction (0.7%).

 

The share of enterprises engaged in web sales keeps growing – from 8.9% in 2010 and 10.2% in 2015 to 12.0% in 2016.

 

Cloud computing services are becoming increasingly more popular[3]. Cloud computing is used for various IT needs of the enterprise, e.g., e-mail and file storage, office software access, hosting of enterprise's databases, etc. At the beginning of 2017, cloud computing services were used by 16.7% of the enterprises employing 10 or more persons.




Cloud computing services more commonly are used by large and medium enterprises[4]. This year, the service was used by 42.9% of large, 22.0% of medium and 14.9% of small enterprises.


In 2017, similarly as in previous years, cloud computing the most often was used by information and communication sector enterprises (52.4%) and companies engaged in professional, scientific and technical activities (33.7%). The smallest share of enterprises using cloud computing was recorded in accommodation and food service activities sector (5.2%).

 

Over the year, the share of enterprises buying cloud computing has risen by 3.6 percentage points – from 8.4% in 2016 to 12.0% in 2017, respectively.

 

E-mail is the cloud computing service used over the internet bought by enterprises the most commonly – 68.6% of the enterprises buying cloud computing. Storage of files (60.4%) and hosting the enterprise’s database(s) (51.8%) are other cloud computing services purchased very commonly.

 

Large enterprises prefer storage of files (69.7%), whereas medium and small enterprises buy e-mail cloud computing service (71.3% and 68.3%, respectively).
