During the meeting the officials discussed Latvia’s macroeconomic situation, the budget formation process, shadow economy and the tax reform, as well as the necessary changes in the education and health care sectors.

Dombrovskis said that the new tax reform will be a limited impact on reducing the tax burden of recipients of small wages, and in this respect Latvia could make more effort. Aseradens noted that reduction of inequality is Latvia’s challenge. Also, the OECD report on Latvia presented on September 15 pointed at this problem.

The officials also discussed the progress in reducing shadow economy. Aseradens said that a significant progress has been achieved in construction, there are also discussion held with other sectors, and capacity of the State Revenue Service is strengthened.

"There is overall positive change in the Latvian society, there is an attitude change in the society," said the minister.

Speaking about the national economic growth, Dombrovskis said that there are still complications in the lending area and he called on business representatives to use the opportunities provided by the so-calls Juncker investment plan and Development Financial Institution Altum.

The parties agreed to continue close cooperation between Latvia and the European Commission in implementation of structural reforms.

In December 2017 bilateral talks between Latvia and the European Commission on the progress of implementation of recommendations are planned.
