Estonia climbs one notch in WEF competitiveness rankings, higher than neighbors

Estonia is ranked 29th among 137 countries in the World Economic Forum's (WEFs) Global Competitiveness Index edition for 2017-2018, one place higher than in the previous report. Lithuania was in place 41, up from 35 in the rankings for 2016-2017, and Latvia in place 54, down from 49 last year, informs LETA/BNS.

Estonia scored 4.85 points on a seven-point scale. The rankings were topped by Switzerland with 5.9 points, followed by the United States and Singapore. The countries at the bottom of the scoreboard were Chad, Mozambique and Yemen.




In sub-indexes, Estonia ranked 15th with 6.07 points for macroeconomic environment and scored 5.02 points for labor market efficiency. The lowest score given to Estonia was 3.1 points for market size, by which indicator Estonia placed 98th overall.


The most problematic factors for doing business in Estonia, according to the report, are tax rates and inadequately educated workforce.

 

Lithuania's showing was the worst in innovations and business sophistication, ranking 44th in the subindex, with business sophistication listed as the worst at 46 th and innovations a bit better at 41st.

 

The country was listed 40th in the subindex of efficiency enhancers and 34th in the subindex of main requirements.
