The overall mood of Latvia’s residents has become more upbeat lately, Teika Lapsa, a spokeswoman for Baltic International Bank, told LETA citing the bank’s latest Latvian Barometer survey.

“The latest Baltic International Bank’s Latvian Barometer shows that with the weather becoming more pleasant, people’s mood has improved as well. The strongest improvement has been recorded in the assessment of the general situation (+5 points) and the country’s current economic state (+3 points). Despite residents’ optimism, however, the government’s performance still received a rather critical assessment in June,” the bank’s spokeswoman said.

In her words, the assessment of Latvia’s general situation improved from -30 to -25 in June, while the assessment of the government’s job performance worsened, dropping from -38 to -40 points. The survey shows that 19% of respondents are satisfied with the government’s job performance and 74% remain disapproving.

In the changeable part of the survey, respondents were asked to express their opinion about the quality of education in Latvia, the education system’s ability to meet the demands of the labor market and the reforms needed in Latvia’s schools.

More detailed results of the survey will be released next Monday, August 21.

Baltic International Bank's Latvian Barometer is a monthly survey examining current processes in areas of economic and social importance. In the first part of the survey, respondents are asked a set of unchanging questions to pinpoint monthly changes in the general mood of the public but the questions in the second part each time deal with a different matter which is currently in the focus of the public attention.
