Dissatisfaction with wages in Estonia has increased

Despite an increase in wages and an improvement in coping, the dissatisfaction of employees with their wages has increased on year, figures from a survey published by the Salary Information Agency on Wednesday show LETA/BNS.

Dissatisfaction is high both when it comes to basic wage as well as opportunities for earning additional remuneration and bonuses. While 35% of respondents were not satisfied with the basic wage a year ago, then this spring the number of people not satisfied was at 39%. Dissatisfaction with basic wage has increased in all wage groups.

"A lack in communication and feedback is behind the dissatisfaction with basic wages. If employees are not included in evaluating work results and the principles of remuneration are not explained enough, the connection between effort and wages may disappear and that can cause dissatisfaction," Kadri Seeder, head of the Salary Information Agency, said.

Results of the survey show that 54%of respondents did not see a clear connection between their contribution and wages, 46% did not deem their wages motivating and 39% found that their wages were not fair.

"Dissatisfaction with wages is often caused by troubling situations and dissatisfaction with other factors, like interest in the job, organization of work processes or the quality of work management -- employees want greater compensation to cover the inconveniences," Seeder said.

The Salary Information Agency carried out the labor market and wages survey in May 2016. A total of 12,790 people took part in the survey, of whom 10,965 were employed in April and 1,825 were unemployed.
