Latvian residents travelled more around Latvia and abroad in 2016

According to the latest data of the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB), in 2016, as compared to 2015, the number of domestic overnight trips of Latvian residents grew by 3.3% and the number of trips abroad increased by 0.7%. The number of nights spent on trips around Latvia increased by 10.6%, and on trips abroad – by 10.5%.

Over the previous year, Latvian residents went on 3.1 mln overnight tourism trips around Latvia with at least one night spent at rented or private accommodation, which is 3.3% more than in 2015. The trips were mostly made for visiting relatives and friends (57.1%) and for recreation (39.1%). Cities under state jurisdiction (Riga, Daugavpils, Jelgava, Jēkabpils, Jūrmala, Liepāja, Rēzekne, Valmiera or Ventspils) were selected as the main destinations less often, as they were chosen in 31.8% of the trips (41.0% in 2015).


Latvian residents spent 7.2 mln nights on domestic overnight trips, which is 10.6% more than in 2015. Most of the nights or 83.8% were spent at private accommodation (with relatives and friends, at summer cottages and other non-rented accommodation). As compared to the year before, the average duration of trips increased by 0.2 days, reaching 2.4 days.


The shortest average duration of a trip (1.7 days) could be observed among residents aged 45–54, whereas the longest average duration (3.4 days) was registered among residents aged 65 and above.


Latvian residents spent EUR 111.3 mln on domestic overnight trips, which is 7.2% less than in 2015. Most of the money was spent on transport to/from the destination (35.0%), in cafés and restaurants (12.6%) and on accommodation (12.5%). Other expenditure was made up by costs of cultural and recreational events, shopping etc. Last year, average expenditure per trip amounted to EUR 36.2, which is EUR 4.2 less than in 2015.


Over the previous year, Latvian residents went on 9.1 million same-day trips around Latvia, which is 18.2 % more than in 2015. Total expenditure grew by 26.3%, reaching EUR 217.0 mln. Average expenditure per same-day domestic trip amounted to EUR 23.8, which is EUR 1.5 more than in 2015.

Residents go abroad mostly for recreation


In 2016, Latvian residents went on 1.2 mln overnight trips abroad, which is 0.7% more than a year before. Most often or in 60.5% of cases the purpose of the trips was recreation, while in 21.1% of cases – visiting relatives and friends. Latvian residents went on most of their overnight trips to Lithuania (17.0%), Estonia (16.8%), Russia (9.8%), Germany (6.7%), Italy (5.8%), Sweden (5.2%), United Kingdom (4.1%), Poland (3.7%) and Belarus (3.1%).

When going on overnight trips abroad, Latvian residents used mostly air transport (in 36.8% of cases), as well as passenger cars and motorcycles (in 35.5% of cases).


Last year, Latvian residents spent 7.4 mln nights abroad (44.6% of the time at the homes of relatives and friends, and 38.4% of the time at hotels), which is 10.5% more than in 2015.

The average duration of a trip was 5.9 days, increasing by 0.5 days in comparison to the previous year. During the previous year, Latvian residents who had the longest trips abroad on average were those aged 65 and above – 7.8 days.


Latvian residents spent EUR 430 million on overnight trips abroad, which is 3.8% less than the year before. The average expenditure per trip amounted to EUR 344.0, which is EUR 15.9 less than in 2015. Most of the money was spent on transport to/from the destination (35.1%), on accommodation (30.1%), as well as in cafés and restaurants (10.6%). Other expenditure was made up by costs of cultural and recreational events, shopping etc.


The average daily expenditure on trips abroad amounted to EUR 58.1, which is EUR 8.6 less than in 2015. When on trips abroad, the least money per day was spent by Latvian residents aged 65 and above (EUR 40.7), whereas the most – by those aged 35 to 44 (EUR 73.6).


Last year, Latvian residents went on 0.7 mln same-day trips abroad, which is 44.2% more than the year before. The total expenditure during these trips grew by 31.3%, reaching EUR 31.2 mln. Average expenditure on same-day trips abroad reduced by EUR 4.4, amounting to EUR 45.2.
