Latvia reports EU's second fastest employment drop in Q4 2016

During the fourth quarter of last year, Latvia recorded the second fastest annual drop in employment among the European Union’s member states, according to the latest Eurostat data.

The number of employed people against Latvia’s entire population decreased by 0.9 percent in the fourth quarter of 2016. The steepest drop (-1.2%) was recorded in Romania and employment in Estonia declined by 0.6% y-o-y.


In other EU member states employment grew in the fourth quarter of 2016. The steepest increases were recorded in Malta (+5.1%), Cyprus (+3%), Ireland (+2.8%), as well as Slovakia (+2.65%, and Slovenia and Spain (+2.4% each). In Lithuania, employment rose 1.5% y-o-y in October-December.


Across the EU, employment increased one percent in October-December against the same period in 2015, while employment in the eurozone grew 1.1%.


Compared to the third quarter of 2016, employment edged up 0.2% in the EU and 0.3% in the eurozone.
