Unemployment in Latvia slightly up to 8.4% in December 2016

The registered unemployment in Latvia increased by 0.4 percentage points (ppt) in December 2016 to 8.4%, the State Employment Agency said LETA.

In early December last year there were 75,348 people registered with the State Employment Agency as jobless but their number increased by 3,009 people to 78,357 jobless at the end of the month.


The lowest unemployment rate or 5.3% was recorded in Riga region, while the highest jobless rate, 17.9%, was observed in the eastern Latvian province of Latgale. At the end of December 2016, unemployment was at 10.4% in the western province of Kurzeme, 9.2% in Vidzeme in north-east of the country, and 8.2% in Zemgale in southern Latvia.


Among Latvia's largest cities, unemployment stood at 5% in Riga, 5.7% in Valmiera, 5.8% in Jelgava, 6.4% in Jurmala, 6.7% in Ventspils, 9.8% in Jekabpils, 11.2% in Liepaja, 11.5% in Daugavpils and 15.7% in Rezekne.


Altogether 2,983 jobless people found permanent employment in December 2016, and there were 4,444 job vacancies registered in the database of the State Employment Agency at the end of the month.


At the end of November 2016, registered unemployment in Latvia was 8%, but in October and September the jobless rate stayed at the same level – 7.9%.
