Lithuania's rate of smokers above EU average - Eurostat

The average share of smokers of cigarettes in Lithuania is higher than that in the rest of the European Union, Eurostat said on Wednesday.

The EU statistics agency said that one in four persons over the age of 15 smoked on a daily basis in 2014, as compared with the EU average of 24%. The rate in Latvia and Estonia was 29.5% and 27.6%, respectively.


Lithuania also featured the widest gap between the male and female smoking population – the percentage of daily smokers was 40.3% among men and 12.3% among women.


Lithuania's share of daily smokers was 20.4%, in addition to 4.6% who said they smoked randomly.
