Freight traffic and freight turnover at ports decreases in the 3rd quarter
Total freight turnover has decreased by 17.2% during the 3rd
quarter. The turnover of freights carried by rail has decreased by 20.3%,
whereas the volume of road freights has grown by 1 mln tonnes or 5.6%. The
average distance of freight transportation has decreased from 207 km to
175 km, and as a result freight turnover has decreased by 11%. The volume
of oil products transported via the main oil products pipeline has decreased by
0.5 mln tonnes or 49.2%, while freight turnover has dropped by 49%.

Freight turnover at ports decreases, while increasing at
the airport
In the 3rd quarter, freights transported to and from
Latvian ports accounted for 14.2 mln tonnes, which was 7.3% less than in
the 3rd quarter of the previous year.
12.3 mln tonnes of freights were shipped from ports,
which was 7.9% less than during the 3rd quarter of the previous year. The
decrease in the volume of freights shipped was mainly caused by a drop in the
volumes of coal and oil products loaded onto ships – a drop of 15% and 25%,
respectively.
The volume of freights received at ports reduced by 3.7%.
This was mainly due to a 34.7% drop in the volume of bulk cargo unloaded from
ships.
In the 3rd quarter, Riga International Airport received and
shipped 4.8 thousand tonnes of cargo, which was 12.4% more than in the
3rd quarter of 2015 – 2 thousand tonnes of the respective cargo were
received and shipped via Latvian airlines.
Less passengers carried by public transport, whereas more
with ships and planes
During the 3rd quarter of 2016, 59.7 mln passengers
were carried by public transport, which was 2.2% or 1.3 mln passengers
less than in the 3rd quarter of the previous year.
As compared to the 3rd quarter of 2015, the number of
passengers carried by rail remained at the level of the previous year (a drop
of 0.3%), the number of passengers carried by regular bus traffic lines
decreased by 1.5%, whereas the number of passengers carried by urban electric
transport reduced by 3.8%.
In the 3rd quarter, 198.8 thousand passengers arrived
at and departed from Latvian ports via ferries, which was 4.1% more than during
the same period of the previous year.
There were 53.2 thousand passengers that arrived at the
Riga Passenger Terminal via cruise ships – 16.7% more than during the 3rd
quarter of the previous year.
Over the 3rd quarter, 1.61 mln passengers arrived at
and departed from the Riga International Airport, which was 2.4% more than
during the same period last year. 906 thousand of those passengers arrived
at and departed from the Riga International Airport via Latvian airlines – 7.4%
more than during the respective period of the previous year.
