Eurostat: Latvia reports second smallest current account surplus in EU in August

In August 2016, Latvia’s current account had a surplus of EUR 0.03 bln, which was the second smallest surplus among EU member states, reporting their current account data, the EU’s statistics office Eurostat informed.

Lithuania had an even smaller surplus– at EUR 0.01 bln, while Estonia’s surplus reached EUR 0.1 bln.


The 13 EU member states reporting their data had accumulated surpluses in their current accounts in August.


The largest current account surplus, EUR 17.87 bln, was recorded in Germany, followed by Italy (EUR 3.37 bln), and Denmark (EUR 2.12 bln).


Altogether, seven EU member states were running current account deficits in August – France (- EUR 5.75 bln), Poland (- EUR 1.05 bln), Finland (- EUR 0.17 bln), Slovakia (-EUR 0.12 bln), Belgium (- EUR 0.11 bln), the Czech Republic (- EUR 0.03 bln), and Romania (- EUR 0.03 bln).

The EU’s seasonally adjusted current account surplus was EUR 13.5 bln in August.


The EU members not reporting their current account data for August 2016 included Austria, Croatia, Ireland, Cyprus, the UK, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden.
