70% of employers in Latvia feel shortage of qualified workforce

Employers in Latvia face serious difficulties in finding qualified workforce as 70 % of employers are having this problem all the time, often or very often, and 85 % find it even hard to find good employees, a poll conducted by the Latvian Employers Confederation (LDDK) suggests writes LETA.

When looking for employees, 47% of companies prefer specialists with professional qualifications – secondary and higher education.

 

Also, 96% of respondents said that raising of employees’ qualifications and further education is important. Companies usually offer five ways in which employees may receive further education or raise their qualifications, including by experienced employees training new employees, internal training systems, participation of employees in events and seminars, written methodological materials and instructions, and company-paid courses in training centers.

The survey suggests that employers are looking for employees in different ways, with four of them being most commonly used – by placing adds on the Internet, through their personal contacts, using social networks, such as LinkedIn.com, and using work-based training environments.

 

More than half of employers said that the ability to put knowledge in practice is very important in potential employees, and the ability to learn new skills, the Latvian language skills, discipline and professional knowledge, communication and cooperation skills, ability to adapt to changes and deal with stressful situations have also been named among the most important features for new employees.

 

The LDDK surveyed 98 companies representing all national economy sectors, with 60% of these companies being medium or large companies with more than 50 employees.
