Eurostat: Latvia posts EU's eighth highest unemployment level in August

The unemployment rate in Latvia in August this year was 9.3 % or the eighth highest among the EU member states which had made their data available, according to information published by Eurostat on Friday.

The following EU member states had higher unemployment than Latvia in August 2016 - Spain (19.5%), Croatia (12.9%), Cyprus (12.1%), Italy (11.4%), Portugal (11%), France (10.5%) and Slovakia (9.5%).


The lowest unemployment rates in August 2016 were recorded in the Czech Republic (3.9%), Malta (4.2%) and Germany (4.2%).


The unemployment rate in Lithuania was 8.6% at the end of August.


The euro area seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 10.1% in August 2016, same as the previous month.


The EU-28 unemployment rate was 8.6% in August 2016, same as the previous month.


Eurostat estimates that 20.973 mln men and women in the EU-28, of whom 16.326 mln were in the euro area, were unemployed in August 2016.


Compared with July 2016, the number of persons unemployed decreased by 40,000 in the EU-28 and by 8,000 in the euro area. Compared with August 2015, unemployment fell by 1.587 mln in the EU-28 and by 875,000 in the euro area.


The data about unemployment in August 2016 were not available about Estonia, Greece, the United Kingdom and Hungary.
