The trust that Estonian citizens have in the major public institutions remains high, with Estonians giving higher scores to the trustworthiness of the legal system, the government and the European Union than citizens of EU member states on the average, reports LETA/BNS.

"Of the institutions measured, Estonian citizens have the biggest trust in the police and the armed forces – respectively 80% and 78% regard them as trustworthy," Aivar Voog, expert at pollster Emor, said.

Next come the legal system with 62%, municipal authorities with 53% and the public administration also with 53%. Of international institutions the European Union and the United Nations top the list with respectively 44% and 43%. The government is trusted by 43%, the parliament by 33% and political parties by 14% of residents.

Compared with a similar survey conducted in fall 2015, trust in the Riigikogu and political parties has declined somewhat. The biggest positive changes compared with fall 2015 took place in trust in municipal governments and the EU, which saw their ratings climb respectively by 8% and 4%.

The Eurobarometer survey 85 was conducted in the 28 member states of the EU, the candidate countries Turkey, former Yugoslav Republic Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Albania, as well as northern Cyprus. In Estonia 1,012 EU citizens living in the country were interviewed.
