Latvia registers EU's 5th largest GDP budget surplus in Q1

In the first quarter of this year, Latvia registered the fifth largest general government budget surplus of the gross domestic product (GDP) among European Union (EU) members, the newest data of the EU statistics office Eurostat gathered on 18 member states and published on Friday shows, reports LETA.

According to the data the Latvia's budget surplus in the first quarter of this year was 0.6 % of GDP. It was larger in Bulgaria (+3.7% of GDP), Malta (+2.8%), Estonia (+2.3%) and Germany (+1.0%).


Meanwhile in Sweden and the Czech Republic it was smaller with +0.4% and +0.1% respectively


The remainder of the countries on which the data was gathered showed a budget deficit.

The largest was in Great Britain (-4.0%), Belgium (-3.5%) and France (-3.4%).


In the first quarter, the seasonally adjusted general government deficit in the EU was 1.8% of GDP. In the last three months of last year it was 2.3%. Whereas in the eurozone the deficit was 1.6% compared to the 2.3% of the GDP in October-December.
