Number of births keeps increasing in Latvia since 2011

The number of births in Latvia has been increasing since 2011. According to the provisional data of the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB), the number of newborns registered during the first six months of 2016 – 10 943 children – is 224 babies or 2% more than during the corresponding period of 2015.

Mortality has slightly increased during the first six months of the year – there have been 14 832 deaths registered, which is 106 more than during the first half of the previous year.

 

As the number of births is still lagging behind the number of deaths, natural increase in Latvia has been negative since 1991. Since the number of deaths exceeded the number of births during the first half of 2016, the population number decreased by 3 889 persons (during the respective period of the previous year – by 4 007).

After a steady rise in the number of marriages that continued for five years the number of registered marriages decreased during the first six months of the present year – 4 585 marriages were registered, which is 119 or 2.5% less than during the corresponding period of the previous year.

On 1 July 2016, the preliminary number of population in Latvia was 1 million 960 thsd, which was 9 thsd less than at the beginning of the year. Data on the key demographic indicators are available in the Population and Social Processes section of the CSB website.
