BC, Tallinn, 16.06.2016.Print version
The Estonian parliament (Riigikogu) on June 15th passed a family benefits law that will bring together in a single law the present laws on family allowances, parental benefits and maintenance allowance, informs LETA/BNS.

The bill initiated by the government was supported by 90 MPs, while there were no votes against it an no abstentions.

The supports related to the birth and bringing up of a child will in the future be known under the uniform name of family benefits. The law will also renew outdated provisions of the present laws.

The legislation sets out new principles of payment of child support aimed at improving the financial situation of children living in a one-parent household in the case the other parent does not fulfill the maintenance obligation. By the government's decision, the monthly allowance per child has been set at up to 100 euros.

The change in the child support payment system was agreed in the government's action plan to alleviate the poverty of children living with a single parent. An alimony fund will be created to make the payments.

The bill will also amend another 19 laws to standardize various electronic procedures in the social sphere and reduce overlapping.
