Number of abortions in Estonia falls by more than half in 15 years

Print versionA total of 6,630 abortions were performed in Estonia in 2015, which is 271 less than in 2014 and compared with 2001 the number has declined by more than a half, reports LETA/BNS.

According to data published by the National Institute for Health Development, 3,155 abortions were performed in Harju County last year, including 2,364 in Tallinn.
In Hiiu County, abortions numbered 33, in East-Viru County 706, in Jogeva County 123, in Jarva County 109, in Laane County 93, in West-Viru County 298, in Polva County 111, in Parnu County 414, in Rapla County 143, in Saare Conty 106, in Tartu County 816, in Valga County 141, in Viljandi County 222 and in Voru County 160.
In the past 15 years, the number of abortions performed in Estonia has declined by more than a half. In 2001, a total of 14,049 abortions were performed and in 2006 the number was 8,654.
