UN member states have given 173 recommendations to Latvia

Revising Latvia’s national report on human rights situation, Kenya has voiced concerns about the large number of stateless people in Latvia, according to the working group’s on the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the UN Human Rights Council review of Latvia's national human rights report, cites LETA.

Kenya praised the initiatives tackling challenges in the area of tolerance, inclusion and prevention discrimination. At the same time, Kenya voiced concerns about the large share of stateless persons in Latvia.

 

Malaysia, meanwhile, praised Latvia’s attempts to solve problems related with domestic violence, including promoting gender equality and protecting persons with disability. The Philippines recognized Latvia’s progress, including in promoting gender equality, protecting women against violence, promoting education and society integration, fighting against hatred crimes. The Philippines though advised Latvia to further report on human trafficking crimes.

 

The Netherlands praised Latvia’s positive role in human rights area and progress in press freedom. At the same time, Latvia should continue attempts in such areas in judicial system and non-discrimination.

 

Russia, however, has voiced deep concerns about regular public events justify Nazism. It is still worried about the situation of Latvian residents with the non-citizen status and situation with linguistic minorities.

 

UN member states have given 173 recommendations to Latvia intended to improve the human rights situation in the Baltic country. Latvia has been advised to address problems with ethnic minorities' integration, ensure asylum seekers' rights and combat domestic violence.
