Number of crimes in Estonia reduced by 7% in 3 months

In the first three months of the year 2016, the number of crimes committed in Estonia decreased 7% compared to the same period last year, informs LETA/BNS.

In the three-month period a total of 6,973 crimes were registered by law enforcement authorities, which is 537 or 7% less than in the same period last year. At the same time in January, the decline totaled 11% on year, while in February it was 4%.

 

Thefts made up the biggest number of crimes at 2,186, which is 11% less than in the same period a year ago and the number of physical abuse cases decreased by 7% to 1,273. The number of registered robberies fell by 15% to 70 cases, while traffic crimes increased by 1% from 880 to 893 on year.

 

Offenses against persons totaled 1,596, including five murders and manslaughters or the same as registered in the first three months of last year. The number of rapes has also declined – from 48 to 41.

 

At the same time, the number of fraud cases has increased from 401 to 406, while the number of breaches of public order have grown from 89 to 125.

 

The number of crimes registered in Estonia last year fell to a record low level and the percentage of crimes that were solved rose. While in 2005 a total of 55,586 offenses were registered in Estonia and in 2008 the indicator still exceeded 50,000, in the present decade the number of crimes has remained below 50,000 and is declining. In 2011, the number of offenses registered was 42,567, a year later 40,816, in 2013, it totaled 39,631, a year later it was 37,787 and last year 32,575, statistics of the Ministry of Justice show.

 

At the same time the percentage of solved crimes increased. Last year investigative bodies solved 20,472 offenses or 63% of all registered crimes. A year earlier, the indicator was 52%, in 2013 and 2012 it was 52% and a year earlier 55%.
