The Cabinet of Ministers in Latvia today approved the government's action plan and its supplement on the most important measures that have to be taken to promote Latvia's economic growth, informs LETA.

The government's action plan provides a detailed description of the targets defined in the government's declaration, measures needed to attain these goals and institutions responsible for achieving implementing the plans.

The government intends to analyze progress on the action plan twice a year, reviewing results for January 1 and July 1, in collaboration with social partners.

Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis (Greens/Farmers) said at Tuesday's government sitting that several points have been deleted from the action plan, while a number of previously scrapped activities have reappeared in the plan as they have a clear source of financing. The prime minister presented the action plan, telling about its main objectives, such as achieving steady GDP growth of 5 percent a year starting in 2018. Kucinskis also underlined the importance of national security, saying that without it achieving other goals is not possible.

After that, each minister presented the main targets concerning their respective sector in the action plan.

In its action plan, the Kucinskis-led Cabinet expresses the resolve to ensure the representation of Latvia's national interests in all international bodies in which Latvia is a member, including by raising additional funding from international financial institutions. Also defined is the objective to conclude accession talks with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) by closing the remaining chapters of the talks by the end of 2016. The government's action plan also speaks about the willingness to strengthen Baltic-Nordic cooperation by using formats like the Baltic Assembly, the Baltic Council of Ministers and NB8. To achieve this, the Foreign Ministry plans to focus on the Latvian presidency of the Baltic Council of Ministers in 2016, as well as promoting cooperation with strategic partners.
