In Q1, number of newborn in Latvia has increased by 2%

Provisional data of the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that, during the first three months of 2016, 5313 newborn were registered in Latvia – 87 babies or 2% more than during the corresponding period of 2015. The number of newborn tends to increase already since 2011.

During the first three months of the year, mortality has grown. The number of deaths registered comprises 7848 – 86 persons or 1.1% more than in the first quarter of the previous year.

 

Number of births still does not exceed the number of deaths, thus natural increase in Latvia has been negative already since 1991. During the first three months of 2016, as the number of deaths exceeded the number of births, number of Latvia population decreased by 2535 persons (in the corresponding period of 2015 – by 2536).

In the first quarter of this year, 1626 marriages were registered, and, as compared to the first quarter of the previous year, the indicator has fallen by 7% or 131 marriages.

On 1 April 2016, total population of Latvia  accounted for 1 million 967.2 thousand.
