Lithuania-Russia 'spy war' – key facts

Russia announced on April 13th that another Lithuanian citizen had been sentenced for spying. Here is a look at some key developments in the "spy war" in recent years, writes LETA/BNS.

BELARUS' SPIES IN LITHUANIA: a Vilnius court in November 2015 sentenced Romualdas Lipskis, a former employee of the state enterprise Oro Navigacija (Air Navigation), to three years and three months in prison.

 

Andrei Oshurkov, a former paramedic with the Lithuanian Armed Forces, in March 2016 was sentenced to three years in prison. The Lithuanian State Security Department (VSD) says that the man collaborated with Belarus' military intelligence service GRU.

 

RUSSIA'S SPIES IN LITHUANIA: Vladimir Malygin, Russia's consul general in Klaipeda, in April 2014 was sent out of Lithuania as an agent of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR).

 

A Russian national, who Lithuania's intelligence service says is an officer of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), was detained in Lithuania in May 2015. According to the VSD, this is the first time that a sworn officer of the Russian security service has been detained in Lithuania for spying. Prosecutors would provide no information about the investigation.

 

It was announced on the last day of 2014 that a Lithuanian Air Force officer had been detained on suspicions of supplying classified information to an unnamed foreign country. A person whom the officer allegedly supplied the information to was also detained. Comments on this case are scarce.

 

LITHUANIA'S SPIES IN BELARUS: a military court in Belarus in December 2013 sentenced two Belarusian nationals to ten and eight years in prison for spying for Lithuania. The persons were identified as A. Fenzelyau and E. Kochura.

 

LITHUANIA'S SPIES IN RUSSIA: a Moscow court in March 2016 sentenced Aristidas Tamosaitis, a Lithuanian national, to 12 years in prison. A court in the exclave of Kaliningrad in April sentenced Yevgeny Mataitis, a dual Lithuanian-Russian national, to 13 years in jail. Moscow says that the two men carried out tasks for the Lithuanian military intelligence service.
