In Estonia, number of corruption crimes growing since 2012

BC, Tallinn, 11.04.2016.Print version
The number of registered corruption crimes in Estonia has been growing since 2012, raising from 161 cases to 459 cases in 2015, while the number of launched criminal proceedings has declined by nearly 25, informs LETA/BNS.

Last year the number of corruption crimes grew 21% compared to 2014 and both years were characterized by a big number of recurrent crimes, which were committed by the same people, it can be seen from last year's report on implementing the government's anti-corruption strategy.

A total of 77 criminal proceedings were connected to registered crimes which is 11 less than the year before.

Although the number of crimes has risen, it is hard to make conclusions about the corruption level based on that because many crimes involve the same people and events, it is written in the report drawn up by the Ministry of Justice.

Two sizeable criminal cases make up 30% of all registered crimes, with respectively 70 and 67 registered crimes. The biggest number of crimes registered were connected to technical inspections of vehicles in 2015.
