The foreign trade deficit of Lithuania amounted to EUR 96.6 mln in February

Statistics Lithuania informs that, based on non-final data obtained from customs declarations, Intrastat reporting and VAT returns data, exports in February 2016 amounted to EUR 1 773.7 million, imports – EUR 1 870.3 million. Exports of goods of Lithuanian origin amounted to EUR 1 028.9 million. The foreign trade deficit of Lithuania amounted to EUR 96.6 million.

Over the month (February 2016, against January), exports increased by 12.8, imports – 17.8%. The increase in exports was influenced by an increase in exports of machinery and mechanical appliances and parts thereof (41.7%), ground vehicles (29.2%), electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof (14.4%). The increase in imports was determined by an increase in imports of ground vehicles (50.9%), machinery and mechanical appliances and parts thereof (32.3%), plastics and articles thereof (22.7%). Mineral products excluded, exports of goods increased by 16.1, imports – 21.7%. Exports of goods of Lithuanian origin increased by 0.4%, mineral products excluded – 3.2%.


Exports and imports in 2011-2016, January-February

Over the year (February 2016, against February 2015), exports increased by 2.5%, while imports decreased by 2.4%. The increase in exports was influenced by an increase in exports of cereals (68.8%), electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof (22.1%). The decrease in imports was determined by a decrease in imports of crude petroleum (33%), edible fruit and nuts (26.2%). Due to a decrease in price, imports of crude petroleum decreased, although in terms of imported amount in tonnes, imports increased by 14.2%. Mineral products excluded, exports of goods increased by 9.1, imports – 7.1%. Exports of goods of Lithuanian origin increased by 0.7, mineral products excluded – 8.5%.

 

In January–February 2016, against the same period of 2015, exports increased by 2.4%, while imports decreased by 4.2%. The increase in exports was determined by an increase in exports of cereals (82.6%), electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof (16.9%). The decrease in imports was influenced by a decrease in imports of crude petroleum (28.6%), fertilisers (37.7%), machinery and mechanical appliances and parts thereof (7.7%). Due to a decrease in price, imports of crude petroleum decreased, although in terms of imported amount in tonnes, imports increased by 8%. Mineral products excluded, exports of goods increased by 5.4, imports – 3.1%. Exports of goods of Lithuanian origin increased by 3.4, mineral products excluded – 6.5%. Exports to Russia decreased by 12, of goods of Lithuanian origin – 4.2%, which was conditioned by a decrease in exports of machinery and mechanical appliances and parts thereof (43.9%), furniture (56.2%); meat and dairy products were not exported. Exports of food and agricultural products (CN sections I–IV) to Russia decreased by 14.2%, of food and agricultural products of Lithuanian origin – increased by 21.6% (in January–February 2015, exports of such products amounted to EUR 8 300.3 thousand, in January–February 2016 – EUR 10 095.6 thousand).

 

In January–February 2016, the most important Lithuania's partners in exports were Russia (11.5%), Poland (9.4%), Latvia (9.1%), and Germany (8.2%), while in imports – Russia (13.7%), Germany (11.8%), Poland (10.8%), and Latvia (7.7%). Most of goods of Lithuanian origin were exported to Germany (10.5%), the United States (10.4%), Poland (7.1%), United Kingdom (6.6%), and Sweden (6.6%).

 

In January–February 2016, the largest share in Lithuania's exports and imports fell within machinery and mechanical appliances, electrical equipment (13.9 and 17.9% respectively), mineral products (13 and 16.8% respectively), and products of the chemical and allied industries (12.2 and 12.9% respectively).  As for the goods of Lithuanian origin, the largest share in exports fell within mineral products (17.5%), miscellaneous manufactured articles (12.1%), and products of the chemical or allied industries (9.2%).
