Saeima in Latvia today confirmed the government of Maris Kucinskis (Greens/Farmers), made up of the previous three coalition parties – the Union of Greens and Farmers, Unity, and National Alliance (All For Latvia-For Fatherland And Freedom/LNNK), informs LETA.

Since the beginning of the economic crisis, members of Unity held the prime minister's office, while a representative of the Greens/Farmers was last appointed prime minister in 2004 when Indulis Emsis headed the government for nine months.

Six ministers in the new government represent the Greens/Farmers Union – Prime Minister Kucinskis, Agriculture Minister Janis Duklavs, Defense Minister Raimonds Bergmanis, Health Minister Guntis Belevics, Finance Minister Dana Reizniece-Ozola, and Transport Minister Uldis Augulis.

Unity is represented by Foreign minister Edgars Rinkevics, Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis, Economy Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Arvils Aseradens, Education and Science Minister Karlis Sadurskis, and Welfare Minister Janis Reirs.

The National Alliance has the following government portfolios – Environmental Protection and Regional Development Minister Kaspars Gerhards, Justice Minister Dzintars Rasnacs, and Culture Minister Dace Melbarde.

Valdis Dombroviskis (Unity), the European Commission's Vice-President for the Euro and Social Dialogue, has congratulated the new Latvian government led by Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis (Greens/Farmers) with taking office and wished the new government determination in pursuing balanced fiscal policy also in the future to ensure for Latvia one of the fastest economic growth rates in the EU.

Dombrovskis, who himself used to serve as the Latvian prime minister in the past, told LETA that Kucinskis had all the required experience and skills to maintain a high-quality social dialogue with social partners and the non-governmental sector about the required structural reforms.

"I wish the new Latvian government to boost public trust in the state power, to strengthen our fundamental national values and to increase Latvia's international influence,” he said.
