Registered unemployment in Estonia grows to 5% in January

Altogether 31,725, making up 5% of the working-age population, were registered as unemployed in Estonia at the end of January 2016, the Unemployment Insurance Fund reported BNS/LETA.

The rate was bigger by 0.3 percentage points than at the end of last December.

 

The rate of registered unemployment was highest as usual in East-Viru County at 11% and Valga County at 8.9%, and lowest in the Harju and Tartu counties at respectively 3.5% and 2.8%. Skilled workers and artificers made up the biggest part of the registered jobless who had previously worked, both accounting for 20%, while manual workers accounted for 19% and service and sales personnel for 17%.

 

New job offers added to the list of offerings of the Unemployment Insurance Fund numbered 3,417. In January 6,039 people found work or started business with the help of the Unemployment Insurance Fund.

 

Recipients of the unemployment  insurance benefit numbered 10,690 in January, making up 30% of the registered jobless. The average benefit per calendar month was 398 euros and the sum total disbursed was roughly 3.8 million euros. The basic unemployment allowance of 137 euros a month was paid to 8,562 persons, 24% of the total number of registered jobless.

 

The redundancy benefit was paid to 1,027 people in January and the average size of the benefit awarded in that month was 1,676 euros. The sum total paid out in redundancy benefits was more than 1.7 million euros.

 

The benefit in case of insolvency of the employer was awarded to 276 persons. The average size of the benefit was 3,087 euros and overall more than 182,000 euros was disbursed under that item.
