Ilmars Mezs: Europe cannot take in all refugees in the world

BC, Riga, 10.02.2016.Print version
Europe cannot take in all the refugees in the world, as Ilmars Mezs, head of the International Organization for Migration offices in Riga, told the LNT television this morning, informs LETA.

"We in Europe cannot accommodate all the refugees of the world, there are too many of them. We have to focus on those who need help the most," said the expert. "The one million people who have reached Europe, are they the ones who need help the most? Or perhaps they simply had some means to reach Europe?"

Mezs believes that concentrating on helping those migrants who have made it to Europe is unfair. That is why, instead of focusing on the refugee relocation program, politicians should rather think about ways to help people in the places where refugees come from, or in countries in the vicinity of such places.

In the meantime, implementation of the refugee relocation program shows that European authorities are unable to implement their own decisions. Seeking the process unfold, Mezs is confident that Latvia does not have to worry about an influx of refugees – he does not believe that 500 refugees could be relocated to Latvia over the next two years, simply because no one will sign up for relocation to Latvia.
