Estonians needed consular assistance on 1,656 occasions in 2015

BC, Tallinn, 04.02.2016.Print version
Residents of Estonia needed consular assistance on 1,656 occasions during 2015 and the most frequent reason for seeking help was theft or loss of a travel document, informs LETA/BNS.

Compared to 2014 the number of cases when consular assistance was provided increased by 6% from 1,586, data provided by the Foreign Ministry shows.

"It means that every day about four new consular assistance cases are opened," head of the Estonian Foreign Ministry's consular department Kersti Eesmaa said in Thursday at a press conference.

But taking into account that Estonians traveled abroad nearly four million times last year the number of such cases is not substantial, she added.

According to Eesmaa some cases get a solution in a few hours, but some cases stretch on for years.

Of the procedures carried out 969 or nearly 60% had to do with a stolen or lost travel document.

In 191 cases Estonian citizens or residents needed consular assistance in connection with detention, in 75 cases in connection with death and in 79 cases in connection with an accident or falling ill.

Estonia provides consular assistance in 39 foreign representations in 34 countries. In addition, some assistance is provided by Estonia's 195 honorary consuls who reside in 83 countries.
