Estonian families with children in danger of poverty, unemployment

BC, Tallinn, 29.01.2016.Print version
According to the European Commission's employment and social development report which analyzes social issues of European countries, Estonian families with children are the most jeopardized by poverty and low employment, the daily Eesti Paevaleht reports, cites LETA/BNS.

When drawing up the report, such features like employment of mothers, parents' employment gap, difference between the employment of mothers and childless women, and the income of childless families compared with families with children were analyzed.

When analyzing these features, it was found that Estonian families are jeopardized the most by poverty and unemployment. When comparing states it was found that Estonian mothers stay away from the job market the longest –- about 20 percent of women return to work in the same year their child was born and 40 percent return next year after giving birth.

A very important impact of this is that when returning to work later they will rather face a decline in income.

The same danger is faced by South European states like Bulgaria, Spain, Croatia and Greece.
