Unemployment in euro area in October posted the lowest level since January 2012

Seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate in the euro area reduced to 10.7% this past October from 10.8% in September, according to the latest report by the European Union's statistical office Eurostat. This is the lowest unemployment level since January 2012, informs LETA.

In the European Union, unemployment rate remained unchanged in October at 9.3% – the lowest since September 2009.

 

According to Eurostat data, there were 22.497 million unemployed in the EU in October, including 17.240 million in the eurozone.

 

Compared to September, the number of unemployed persons in the EU decreased by 36,000 in October, and in the euro area – by 13,000 persons.

 

Compared to October 2014, the number of unemployed persons decreased by 1.942 million in the EU and by 1.302 million in the euro area.

 

As compared to September 2015, unemployment rate decreased in 24 EU member states and increased in four.

 

The highest rates were recorded in Spain – 21.6%, Croatia – 15.8%, and Cyprus – 15.1%.

Unemployment in Greece was higher than in Spain, 24.6%, but the latest data available from Greece are for the month of August, not October.

 

On the other hand, the lowest unemployment rates were registered in Germany – 4.5%, Czech Republic – 4.7%, and Malta – 5.1%.

 

Unemployment in Latvia was 9.9% in October, and in Lithuania – 8.9%. Data for Estonia are not yet available, but in September 2015, unemployment in Estonia was at 6%.
