Latvia's population intend to focus mainly on their education and career during the three years left until Latvia's centenary to be celebrated in 2018, according to the Future section of the Survey of Latvian Values carried out by Swedbank, cites LETA.

Reinis Jansons, director of the Swedbank Institute of Finances, said during the presentation on Tuesday that an average 42% of respondents did not plan their professional career, and most of respondents or 35% tended to plan their finances only a month ahead.

There are 12% of respondents, whose main goal is to improve their health condition, and a new home or improvements to the existing housing is the main goal for another 12% of respondents. Only 2% intend to focus on raising children.

As to what people expect from the state in the run-up to Latvia's centenary, 22% want to see more efforts to improve people's well-being, 10% said improving employment was paramount and 9% said the focus should be on the economic growth. Reducing the tax burden and improving the education system were mentioned less frequently –- by 2% of respondents each.

On the whole, the survey revealed that Latvians have an extremely low planning horizon – on average 37% of respondents do not plan their lives at all, 33% do not plan lives of their children, and 41% do not make any plans for vacation or travels.

The survey was carried out in January this year in cooperation with SKDS pollster, interviewing over 1,500 people across Latvia. Swedbank intends to continue the Survey of Latvian Values until Latvia's centenary in 2018.
