Lithuanian employers cautious about possibilities for refugees to get jobs

BC, Vilnius, 24.11.2015.Print version
Lithuanian employers are cautious in assessing the possibilities for war refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, Eritrea and other countries to enter the country's labor market and see the language barrier as a key problem, a survey carried out by Berent Research Baltic has shown, cites LETA/BNS.

34% of respondents said they saw no or almost no possibilities for refugees' integration into the Lithuanian labor market. 33% rated these possibilities as good or medium, and 30% said they were neither good nor bad.

30% of those polled thought that refugees would have no impact on the country's labor market. 38% thought the impact would be negative and another 27% said it would be positive.

Fifty-seven of the employers surveyed said that their company had no or almost no employment possibilities for war refugees. Thirteen said that the possibilities for employing refugees were neither good nor bad. 18% rated these possibilities as medium, and 10% said they were good.

33% of those polled saw the language barrier as the main problem for refugees in getting employed by their company and 21% said it was a lack of qualifications and competencies. Another 21% said that they had no prejudice against refugees and that their chances of being employed would depend on their qualifications and their desire to learn and improve.

60% of respondents said that if they employed a refugee, they would not agree to spend money of his or her training. Only 10% of the employers surveyed said they would cover these costs.

Berent Research Baltic surveyed 455 companies and organizations in Lithuania between late October and early November.
