Estonian PM: Russia sanctions must not be linked to solving of Syria crisis

BC, Tallinn, 17.11.2015.Print version
Russia's potential participation in solving the conflict in Syria should have no effect whatsoever on the sanctions imposed on Moscow, Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Roivas said on November 16th, cites LETA/BNS.

"These topics definitely have to be handled separately. Sanctions have been imposed on Russia purely and simply because they have acted as an aggressor in eastern Ukraine, because they have annexed Crimea," Roivas said at the government press conference.

"That Russia sits at the table when the Syria crisis is being solved or when it's a party to it can in no way mitigate what they have done in Ukraine and the consequences arising from that," the prime minister said.

"I very much hope that just like we are doing here, all of the international community will continuously keep Ukraine in the focus," Roivas said.

"Under no circumstances should we adopt the attitude that now that Russia is trying to help –- we really hope that it will indeed help –- to find a solution in Syria, this has eliminated all other issues. This definitely is not the case," the prime minister said.

Meeting with incumbent President Francois Hollande on Sunday, Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy said France needs a new foreign policy strategy.

"We must draw conclusions from the situation in Syria. We need everyone to help fight the Islamic State, notably the Russians," the Financial Times quoted Sarkozy, leader of the country's main opposition party, as saying.

Gun and bomb attacks claimed by the Islamic State group killed 129 people and wounded scores of others in Paris on Friday, in the bloodiest attacks in Europe since the Madrid train bombings in 2004. On Saturday, French President Francois Hollande announced three days of mourning.
