Profile of Estonian e-voter no longer differs from that of average voter

After three elections in Estonia where online voting has been possible, the profile of e-voters no longer differs from the average voter profile, a study by researchers at the University of Tartu finds, cites LETA.

"From 2011 onwards, people voting over the internet no longer differ from the people who vote by casting a ballot at the ballot box by their age, education level or computer skills," the authors of the survey say.

A change like this has not happened overnight but has taken three elections to materialize, the authors, Kristjan Vassil and Mihkel Solvak, said.

It can be said that implementation of new technologies is conducive to the inclusion of voters, not their inclusion.

Hence new election technologies help to overcome barriers to political participation and are not creating additional barriers.

Vassil and Solvak conducted the survey after the Riigikogu elections of March 1 this year.

A conference on e-voting was held at the University of Tartu at the beginning of November where the findings of surveys on the subject were presented and potential future developments discussed.
