Estonians' health one of the worst among wealthy countries

The health indicators of Estonian residents are among the lowest in the fresh Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) health survey, reports LETA.

Estonian men's life expectancy at birth ranks 32nd and life expectancy at 65 years of age ranks 31st among the 34 OECD member states and partnership countries surveyed. When looking at the same indicators for women, Estonia ranked respectively 26th and 27th. The share of people in the population who die of cardiovascular diseases places Estonia 32nd.

 

Estonia also ranks low when looking at the share of smoking grownups and alcohol consumption levels –- 31st and 33rd, respectively. Estonia places higher in the comparison of health risk factors: the share of obese grown-ups puts Estonia in 18th place and the share of obese children in 7th place.

OECD's annual report "Health at a Glance" provides an overview of the health state and behavior of the residents of 34 countries that OECD member states or partnership countries. The fresh report is based on data from 2013.

 

This new edition of Health at a Glance presents the most recent comparable data on the performance of health systems in OECD countries. Where possible, it also reports data for partner countries (Brazil, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, India, Indonesia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russian Federation and South Africa). Compared with the previous edition, this new edition includes a new set of dashboards of health indicators to summarise in a clear and user-friendly way the relative strengths and weaknesses of OECD countries on different key indicators of health and health system performance, and also a special focus on the pharmaceutical sector. This edition also contains new indicators on health workforce migration and on the quality of health care.
