Kasparov: Putin could attack Latvia and Estonia if oil prices continue to fall

BC, Riga, 13.10.2015.Print version
Russian opposition politician Garry Kasparov told Fox News that if the price of crude oil prices drop to 20 dollars per barrel, Russian President Vladimir Putin may attack NATO members such as the Baltic states out of desperation, LETA/ERR reports.

Speaking about Russia's recent Syrian venture, Kasparov said it is part of the Kremlin's attempt to create chaos in the world. “It is a global plan to destroy the current world order and stability. Dictators always benefit from chaos. The Russian economy is not in a good shape and Putin knows it will not get better. He has to provide a legitimate reason, to the Russian public, why he's staying in power for so many years and is planning to stay there forever,” he told the U.S. channel.

He said dictators are able to act quickly and decisively in chaos, unlike democratic nations, adding that the bombing operation in Syria will force more refugees towards Europe.

Kasparov said it is Putin's priority to increase petrol prices beyond the 50-dollar mark.

“I think he'll come back to Ukraine. If oil goes down to USD 20, I would not be surprised if he crosses NATO borders into Estonia and Latvia. But I would keep an eye on another destination,” he said.

Kasparov added that Libya could be another destination, as it is important in the oil industry, and disarray could add to the migration crisis.
