Lithuania jumps from 41st place on Global Competitiveness Index to 36th

Among 140 countries in the world, Lithuania on the latest Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) ranked 36th, going up by 5 notches from 41st last year (in 2012 - 45th). Estonia, meanwhile, went down from 29th to 30th, Latvia - from 42nd to 44th, writes LETA/ELTA.

In the World Economic Forum's (WEF) Global Competitiveness Report 2015-2016, Lithuania leads in HIV and AIDS prevention.


Lithuania received its best ranking in these categories: duty rate in trade tariffs (5th place), impact of foreign direct investment on introduction of technologies (9th), no procedures for business launch (9th), no deadlines to start a business (9th), flexibility of salaries (11th), and internet access at schools (11th).


Asked to indicate what the biggest obstacle for business development is, 16.6 percent of Lithuania's business named inefficient bureaucracy. Second came the size of taxes (14.8 percent), third - restrictive work regulation (13.5 percent).


USA, Singapore, and Hon King for the third time lead in the Global Competitiveness Index.

The Global Competitiveness Report 2015-2016 assesses the competitiveness landscape of 140 economies, providing insight into the drivers of their productivity and prosperity.


The Report series remains the most comprehensive assessment of national competitiveness worldwide.
