The obligation to register employment contracts that was implemented in July 2014 increased the number of people officially earning income by 21,000, writes LETA/National Broadcasting.

The Tax and Customs Board reported that due to the register, the State has gained at least 11.8 million euros in tax revenue.

“Upon inspections we see that awareness of wages paid “under the table” and related risks has improved,” said Director General of the Tax and Customs Board Marek Helm.

He added that the solution of the employment register where one system is used by several authorities for providing people with necessary services has very much justified itself.

“The register makes it possible for employees to check whether they have been employed lawfully. A registered working relationships provides people with social guarantees and the opportunity to check data on the terms of one's employment relationship prevents possible problems in labour relationships,” explained Director General of the Labour Inspectorate Maret Maripuu.
