Huge amount of Estonians get partly envelope wages in 2015

BC, Tallinn, 15.07.2015.Print version
The number of employees in Estonia, who receive part of their pay as "envelope wages", i.e. without paying taxes on them, has increased significantly in 2015 as compared to the previous year, Äripäev.ee cites a survey of CV Centre.

While 69% of respondents claimed to receive wages justly, the share of people who said they get part of their pay as envelope wages was the highest in 6 years, writes LETA.

This year, 20.19% answered that they get partially envelope wages. Last year, 7.3% of respondents claimed that.

"Payment of envelope wages is still a matter of concern in spheres that handle cash, which becomes more active during the summer," commented the CV Keskus marketing manager Henry Auväärt.

With the launch of the employment registry last year, 20,000 taxpayers were added who previously received envelope wages. The study also showed that the number of respondents, who received their pay fully as envelope wages, has decreased by 16.9%, and descended to the lowest level in the last six years. However, the average salary of the added workers is substantially lower than the average salary of the whole industry, which shows that part of the wages are paid to workers covertly.

1,570 respondents participated in the survey this year, of whom 1,179 were wage earners.
