Every fifth resident in Lithuania – a student

In the 2014-2015 academic year, the number of students in Lithuania per 1,000 population totalled 182 (in 2013-2014, 187). In total, in the 2014-2015 academic year, the number of students amounted to 532,000, or each fifth resident of Lithuania, informs LETA/ELTA.

In 2014, compared to 2013, the number of students decreased by 20,000, or 3.6%, Statistics Lithuania said.

 

The total number of students has been annually decreasing. Over past ten years, the number of students countrywide decreased by 252 thousand (32%).

 

In 2014, compared to 2013, the number of general schools decreased from 1,208 to 1,200, the number of students in them – from 358,000 to 345,000.

 

In 2014, lower secondary education certificates were received by 32,000 students (in 2013, 35,000), of whom 27,000, or 86%, continued education in the 11th grade and pursued upper secondary education (91% of female and 81% of male students).

 

In the 2014-2015 academic year, there were 76 vocational education institutions, with almost 46 thousand students in them. Compared to the previous academic year, the number of students in vocational schools increased by 800, or 1.8%. 22,000, or 46% of, students, alongside acquiring a profession, pursued upper secondary education.

 

In the 2014-2015 academic year, 40% of the youth aged 20-24 were pursuing higher education (in 2013, 42%).

 

In 2014, 53% of residents of Lithuania aged 30-34 had higher education (in 2013, 51%).
