In a democratic country, it is also important to hear public opinion, like on the refugee issue, believes Ombudsman Juris Jansons, reports LETA.

Jansons said in an interview with the LNT morning show 900 sekundes that the public's opinion could be studied through a consultative referendum. It would show how ready the community is to accept the refugees allotted by the EU.

Asked to voice his personal opinion, the ombudsman said that for humanitarian reasons, he supports them, stressing that it would better to focus on the cause of the problem.

As reported, the European Commission last month adopted the first set of concrete measures to implement the European Agenda on Migration. A total of 40,000 refugees will be relocated from Italy and Greece to other EU member states based on a distribution key over the next two years. According to this plan, Latvia would have to take in 310 refugees from Italy, and 207 from Greece. At the same time, Latvia would also have to take in 220 refugees from outside the EU.

Latvia's only refugee center Mucenieki, which is located in Ropazi Region, can currently take in an additional 50 migrants.
