Mayor Sesks: job market situation in Liepaja is not hopeless

BC, Riga, 26.05.2015.Print version
There are about 250 job vacancies in Liepaja at the moment in the industrial sector, thus those persons being laid off by KVV Liepajas metalurgs have options and the situation is not as hopeless as it seems, Liepaja Mayor Uldis Sesks told ''Rietumu radio'' today, cites LETA.

''We recently called a meeting with the State Employment Agency and representatives from our welfare services, where we analyzed how best we could assist those persons which will be laid-off,'' said Sesks.

There are also many small and medium-sized businesses operating in Liepaja which continue to develop and need employees, Sesks said.

''Overall, there are approximately 34,000 jobs in Liepaja, thus the reduction of employees at the metallurgical company will not leave a substantial impact on the job market situation,'' he added.

As reported, KVV Liepajas metalurgs at this time is laying off 15% of its workers, the company's representative Inese Ozolina told LETA.

"There is no way of telling the exact number of employees who will be released. The company's owners are still conducting calculations, redesigning the business plan, but the final figure will be known only afterwards," said Ozolina.

Taking into account that at the beginning of May, 960 people had a job at KVV Liepajas metalurgs, 15% could be equal to 150 employees, as LETA has calculated.

KVV Liepajas metalurgs has been instructed to curb output at its steel casting plant, as the production costs are too high, and they undermine competitiveness of the company's products compared to those made by counterparts elsewhere in the European Union and the world, KVV Liepajas metalurgs board member Igor Kovalenko previously told LETA.
