Compared with the most developed countries, Latvian business leaders admit that the level of corruption in Latvia's economic environment is significantly higher. Hence, 55% of Latvian business leaders agree with the statement that corruption in Latvia is very common, as compared with 35% in the most developed economies, according to the latest EY (former Ernst&Young) survey on fraud and corruption "Fraud and Corruption – The Easy Option for Growth?", informs LETA.

At the same time, Latvian business leaders believe that financial performance in Latvia is at a high level.

The results of the survey of 3,800 respondents across 38 countries show that 55% of Latvian business owners believe that bribery and corrupt practices happen widely in business in Latvia, which is a slightly better result than in Russia (60%), and significantly worse than in France (29%), Germany (26%), Estonia (21%), and countries with the lowest corruption awareness level – Sweden (10%) and Denmark (4%).

The highest number of European respondents, who believe that corruption in their country is widespread is in Croatia (92%) and Slovenia (87%).

EY's survey reveals that business representatives in Latvia have a higher opinion of the level of transparency in financial reporting and accuracy in their country than those in Eastern Europe and even the most developed countries. Only 22% of Latvian respondents believe that companies in Latvia report financial performance as better than it actually is, as compared with 39% in Eastern Europe and 33% in the most developed economies.
