Recently, more and more Lithuanian residents have tended to think that it is possible to solve their problems by giving a bribe, reveals a new survey announced on Wednesday.

During the survey, even 64% of respondents stated being ready for giving a bribe. It was indicated by a lesser number of civil servants and businessmen (42% and 51% of respondents respectively), reports ELTA.

The survey Lithuanian Map of Corruption 2008 of the Lithuanian branch of the organization Transparency International (TILS) showed that both experts and respondents continued considering corruption one of the most serious problems in Lithuania.

In the opinion of 54% of respondents, the level of corruption became especially high in Lithuania over the past five years. As in 2007, the respondents noted that politicians were to be blamed for corruption (88% of Lithuanian residents and 85% of businessmen). A far lesser number of respondents admitted that it was they or their environment that were guilty for corruption (18% of residents, 12% of civil servants and 24% of businessmen).

In their evaluation of possible corruption at institutions, all groups of respondents mentioned the Seimas, the Government and political parties among five mostly corrupt institutions in the country.

The surveys were conducted by the public opinion and market research company Vilmorus, RAIT and VISEO from September 2008 till February 2009. A total of 1,050 residents, 509 civil servants and 500 heads of companies were questioned.
