EU comparison: Estonian women become mothers early

As compared to other European Union countries, Estonian women become mothers quite early – only in three countries is the average age for having the first child smaller, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

Estonian women had their first child, as of 2013, at an average age of 26.5 years, Eurostat data shows. Compared with Estonia, women were younger than that when they had their first child only in Bulgaria (25.7), Romania (25.8) and Latvia (26.1).

 

Italy (30.6), Spain (30.4), Luxembourg (30) and Greece (29.9) are at the top of the table. The European Union average is 28.7 years.

 

Also, regarding the proportion of teenage mothers, Estonia is in the first end of the table. 8% of all patients having their first child were in their teens.

 

Estonia was behind the six countries regarding this – Romania (15.6%), Bulgaria (14.7%), Hungary (11), Slovakia (9.9%), Latvia (9.1%) and the UK (8.2%).
