Lithuania PM: education, social reforms needed in order to boost competitiveness

BC, Vilnius, 12.05.2015.Print version
Lithuania's competitiveness must be boosted through education and social reforms, said Prime Minister of Lithuania Algirdas Butkevicius after a meeting with representatives of the Business Council, cites LETA.

"No one doubts the necessity of a new social system, but it is also important to reach compromises that would meet the expectations of employees, employers and the unemployed. We hope the issue will be considered on Thursday at the Government's strategic committee. We will decide when to submit the project for the consideration of the Cabinet," said the prime minister.

According to the head of Government, it should be looked to the future and realised what kind of specialists Lithuania would need, what study programmes would be competitive.

"The step has been made – we will soon complete harmonising the draft Law on Higher Education and Research, which will help to avoid duplicate study programmes and will improve competitiveness of higher education establishments," said the prime minister and emphasised that major business organisations agree with the need for changes in higher education.

The Business Council is an organisation uniting major Lithuanian business groups: the Investors' Forum, Lithuanian Confederation of Industrialists, Lithuanian Business Employers' Confederation and the Association of Lithuanian Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Crafts.
