Latvian PM not planning to step down

BC, Riga, 29.04.2015.Print version
Despite an increase in the number of residents who have a negative opinion of Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma's (Unity) performance, the premier told the LNT television this morning that she was not planning to resign, and that she had no information that her resignation had been discussed within Unity, informs LETA.

"I can say that I am not planning to resign, neither on July 7, when the last report on Latvia's presidency is to be submitted to the European Parliament, nor on August 1 or September 1," stressed Straujuma.

Commenting on her popularity rating, Straujuma said that it could reflect the opinion of those residents who support Harmony. "It is possible that at least some part of Harmony's voters expect a different stance on the developments in Ukraine," said the premier, adding that she was not going to change her opinion just to become more popular. "The events in Ukraine, and Russia's role in these events, cannot be interpreted differently," she added.

The proportion of residents who have a negative opinion of Straujuma's performance reached a new record high in April, but at the same time, the proportion of those who have positive opinion of Straujuma has stabilized, according to a survey carried out by "Latvijas Fakti". 47.5% of respondents said in April they had a negative opinion of Straujuma's performance. Last February, the figure was 20.7%.
